The 7 Forms of Visual Art

Creative and artistic people, when asked, will tell you that they started writing, reading, drawing or painting at a very young age. A professional course in Fine Arts will only help you hone your skills and come closer to perfection. A creative flow is triggered when you are urged to analyse rather than think, learn rather than watch and communicate rather than simply talk.

An artistic mind requires a creative outlet using priceless and refined practical techniques having extraordinary yet vague ideas; and being able to translate it on paper demands exceedingly creative and visually diverse minds.

The Art of Art

What Art is cannot be given fixed characteristics there is no one single universally agreed to definition of Art. What we do know is that it requires a person’s ability to express or apply creative skills and put their imagination to superior use; one that is beyond comparison. A diverse range of ideas from beauty to emotion from technical to conceptual go into the making of Art.

Art is what stimulates an individual’s feelings, emotions, thoughts, beliefs or simply works up the senses. Understanding Art requires a dominant right brain. Its display and the expression that it depicts is what gives the art it’s beauty.

Art doesn’t necessarily just have to be pictures or illustrations; it can be two lines from a song or a short poem – or it can be a sloppy Graffiti down the walls of a street. Art is made through the use of imagination and skills. Anything that embodies creativity and affects the use of the mind’s eye will be considered as Art by somebody or the other.

Forms of Art

There are no specifically fixed forms of Art, since mediums of artistic expression have changed throughout human history. But, to a large extent, it is embodied in one or the other classical forms.

All the different forms of Art must accord with the diverse kinds of experiences and have differing efforts on our emotions and feelings.Let’s explore what each Art from encompasses – its history and how it enriches our lives today.

Painters are artists who predominantly voice their creative thoughts using paint as their primary medium. A work of art is portrayed when a painter wields a variety of shades and uses them as a solid surface, like a Canvas.

Whether it’s still life portrait, landscape seascape, pop art or abstract paintings are classified by their style and genre painting styles include Modernist, Expressionist, Classical, Cubist, Chinese style and Impressionist among others.

It is a 3D visual image created traditionally with clay, metals, stone, ceramics or even wood.  Sculpture, like painting, also dates back to prehistoric times. The evolution of this visual art form started with Donatello and his likes, when they started using carving and casting techniques with the use of marble and bronze.

Some examples of classic sculptures are the ‘Statue of Liberty’, ‘The Great Sphinx of Giza’ and ‘David’. Modern sculptors, however, partake in creating art with any object at their disposal like glass, plastics, metals etc.

Words have a definite meaning. As a painter uses paint, a sculptor uses stone and chisel and an architect uses pens, pencils and a scale, so a writer uses words. Being clear with the words and the writing that you produce is a writer’s prime concern. Staying unclear with the expressions or making approximations lead to an equally vague meaning of words.

The second a dynamic certainty about language is its evolution. Words have a tendency to develop nuances and new meanings; which is indeed very natural to be. If, at any point in your literature, you end up reflecting the Darwinism of your words, you yourself won’t know the meaning of whatever it is that you’re trying to communicate. And that’s when Art and Literature get disconnected.

“Art imitates Nature.” Architecture, similar to writing a poem, comes into being as a result of creative thinking. It includes an artistic beauty and a scientific and mathematical precision to build designs for people, environment or simply for the art of it.

Architecture is at the very root of Visual Art. Take an example of Michelangelo, who, an artist-cum-architect is the creator of some of the finest frescoes and sculptures in the history of Western Art. Architecture is defined as the process of planning, designing and constructing buildings and other structures.

In this time and age, when all of art is abstract and their definitions may be blurry, Architecture plays with the aesthetics desire of the people.

How has Art inspired film making? There have been innumerable scholarly debates since the invention of film about the relationship between cinema and Visual Arts. It is very commonly said that Film is Art and television is a medium. However, nothing can match the superiority of great cinemas. Cinemas’ scale and detail give it an emotional and intellectual depth and cannot come close to the experience that television can provide.

It’s like comparing Diamond to Iron. Would you rather watch the Titanic sink in the North Atlantic Ocean on iPad or the silver screen?

Music and Visual Arts are intertwined and symbiotic. The concept of Synaesthesia actually came out of this relationship only. Blending of the senses, the idea is that sensory perception of one kind can manifest itself as a sensory experience of another. The essence of Music in artwork is probably the best way to mesmerize one’s body and soul.

To bring about the energetic and joyful mood with the Music onto the watcher is what Music as a Visual Art form is all about.

Theatre –

First, we need to understand the inclusives of this Art form. A collaboration of words, music, gestures, sound, audience and other virtual elements, theatre encompasses not only live, scripted performances but also dramatic ones such as on television and other electronic media.

Aside from the standard dialogue style of theatre plays, it also takes up other forms like musicals, operas, illusions, classical Indian dances and non-conventional forms such as post-modern theatre.

Theatre is about the analysis and resolution of fundamental human issues. Art is understanding and representing the interactions between people. It is bringing a page to life; except it is so much more than that. Theatre is an incorporation of different Art forms into one piece of Art.

Conclusion –

The fundamental component of human experience that can demonstrate the time and age we live in is Art. Understanding our history, our culture and the diversity is made fairly easy with Art and its forms. Having a deeper understanding of our emotions increases self-awareness and keeps us open to new ideas and experience.
